SysBuilder

I have completed the alpha version of SysBuilder.
It is a work in progress but a great tool for the beginner that
does not want to spend the time to learn what is involved in
building a system but is in small enough chunks that you can
learn the concepts very quickly if wanted.
It will allow you to build a base system at this time.
Working on adding the code to customize the system to include
packages that you want.

Requires:
  1. a disk partition to build the new system on ( I use a 32G USB stick)
      A. You can build directly to a hd partition if you have the space.
  2. Takes about 2 days to run to completion on my laptop.
      A. It has restart capabilities but I have a few undocumented features (bugs) there.
  3. Kinda minty feeling at completion - this may change.
  4. Allows you to select desktop at runtime. I have MATE working well. Working on
      KFCE, KDE, and Gnome.

Will upload and make available this week - I hope.
Need testers - any takers?
Sure hope I am not wasting my time.

I might spend some time playing with it, but, what I really need now is what I had with Pinguy Builder 4.3-8 when it worked with Linux Mint XFCE 18 but got broken during some updates to either Mint or the underlying Ubuntu. I was generous with the donations to Pinguy, I will be to you too. My forum membership over there disappeared so the list of bugs I had reported is no longer there. The main one was grub-efi wouldn't install offline and it would hang when doing an online install.

I will check that out - did you try the last OSBuilder I uploaded.
It had several fixes in it - do no remember anything for Mint.
I have a Mint partition - I will test as soon as I get to a break point.
Contributions are nice but not my driving factor - I may put a button
for support later. I really want more people to become involved.
I am old and retired so I need younger people to step up.
I have been doing unix/linux since 1970. Started at Bell Labs.
I just do this stuff for fun mostly.

If you find/remember your bug list, send it to me.

I thought OSBuilder was for 14.04 (Mint 17)? "It has small updates over the 14.4 Pinguy version."

I tried OSBuilder, as you can see from the end of the log file, it didn't work:

------------------------------------------------------
Command-line options = dist
------------------------------------------------------
Removing the ubiquity frontend as it has been included and is not needed on the normal system
Calculating the installed filesystem size for the installer
Removing OSBuilder-firstboot from system startup
Making disk compatible with Ubuntu Startup Disk Creator.
Creating md5sum.txt for the livecd/dvd
Creating IWLNX-dist.iso in /home/OSBuilder/OSBuilder
genisoimage: Uh oh, I cant find the boot image 'isolinux/isolinux.bin' !
Making IWLNX-dist.iso a hybrid iso
Creating IWLNX-dist.iso.md5 in /home/OSBuilder/OSBuilder
Creating IWLNX-dist.iso.sha256 in /home/OSBuilder/OSBuilder
/home/OSBuilder/OSBuilder/IWLNX-dist.iso which is 36K in size is ready to be burned or tested in a virtual machine.

I will test it on Mint as soon as I get SysBuilder stable.
I will let you know when ready.

Thanks, Larry, anxiously awaiting.   Smile

It now will build a base Debian system.
I have identified 50 packages to bring this to a Pinguy like system.
If anyone has specific packages they need/want or packages to delete - let me know.

Have some small problem generating later kernels ( you can build a custom kernel if you want).
It is summer time here at the Farm so I spend most days mowing pastures which only leaves evenings
to work on fun stuff.

Anyone have a desktop they think should be the default.
The old pinguy seemed tied to gnome.

Gdm3/Gnome has a lot of changes on the desktop.
I prefer the lighter DT (lightdm/lxdm), but since I am doing this
for the larger group - I need to know what most prefer.

The latest version builds on Debian9 stretch.

Also the menu is cluttered with lots of stuff in pinguy,
what is actually needed and what can go away? What do you use most?

Xfce is my favorite desktop and LXDM my favorite login/display manager.
